#AmericanDiversity – Diaspora: China Towns – San Francisco/NYC

The history of Chinese immigration to the United States can be divided into two periods: the first during the 1850s to 1880s which was then halted by federal laws restricting Chinese immigration; and the second during the late 1970s to the present, which is a by-product of the normalization of U.S.-Chinese relations.

The Chinese diaspora population in the United States is comprised of approximately 4.4 million individuals who were either born in the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan.

Today major cities throughout the country have thriving China Towns that continue to maintain the spirit of Chinese immigrants.  San Francisco boasts the largest and oldest China Town which illustrates how a group of people bound by a unique culture and history can unite and flourish into an American hallmark.
