To show some of the variety in American animation and comics, this week we are highlighting a few cartoon characters and superheroes. Batman made his first appearance in Detective Comics (now DC Comics) Issue 27 released in 1939. He was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Batman is the crime fighting alter ego of billionaire Bruce Wayne. He is driven to rid Gotham City of crime after the murder of his parents when he was just a child. To assist with his crime fighting, he works with Robin. Robin is sometimes referred to as the Boy Wonder. The character of Robin was created by Kane, Finger, and Jerry Robinson. He first appeared in Detective Comics Issue 38 released in 1940. The original Robin was Dick Grayson, an orphan who became the ward of Bruce Wayne. Together Batman and Robin work together to protect Gotham city from villains such as Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Two-Face, Bane, Mr. Freeze and the infamous Joker. Unlike other superheroes, Batman uses his smarts and technology instead of supernatural abilities to fight crime. The crime-fighting has also been portrayed in television and movies as well as newspaper comic strips, books, radio dramas and stage shows. The Batman television series, staring Adam West, premiered in 1966, and in 1989, Warner Bros. released the first live-action feature film Batman starring Michael Keaton.
