美国和中国对官方教育交流项目的支持已有一百年多年历史。1909年，庚子赔款奖学金设立，旨在支持中国学生到美国大学学习。1909至1929年间，约有1300名中国学生参与了这项奖学金，其中很多人日后成为杰出的领袖，在政府和各学术领域担任高级别、有影响力的职务，这有一部分要归功于美国高等教育对他们产生的重要影响。

国际访问者公众讲座：“庚子赔款”与中国教育的现代化 / The Boxer Indemnity and Chinese Educational Modernization

此讲座将用中文进行。

本专题是文化系列讲座“追寻中美文化交流的历史足迹”的重要组成部分。它通过事件分析的形式，以具体的案例揭示重大的文化主题和历史矛盾，加深公众对中美文化的深层理解，并且进行必要的人文思考。

本专题将围绕着四个问题展开分析：一、“庚子赔款”的历史；二、从清华学堂到清华大学；三、清末新政与教育的改革；四、教会教育的社会化和民主化。

This lecture is an important part of the series “Looking for Historical Roots in Sino-American Culture”. It will analyze the complex cultural themes and historical contradictions with a focus on specific events in history. The purpose of this lecture is to deepen public understanding of Sino-American Culture, and initiate humanistic thoughts.

This lecture includes four sections: 1) The History of the Boxer Indemnity; 2) From Tsinghua School to Tsinghua University; 3) The new Politics and Educational Reformation at the end of the Qing Dynasty; 4) Socialization and Democratization of the Ecclesiastic Education.

讲者简介： 侯且岸博士现任北京行政学院教授，北京师范大学兼职教授、博士生导师，同时也担任国际中国文化研究学会副会长。他长期从事中国近现代思想文化、国外中国学的研究与教学。主要学术著作有：《当代美国的“显学”——美国现代中国学研究》、《费正清与美国汉学》、《当代中国的“显学”——中国现代史学与思想新论》、《认知中国：文化研究的路径》、《中国现代学术思想史论集》等，发表学术论文百余篇。

Speaker:   Dr. Hou Qie’an, professor of Beijing Administrative College, and adjunct professor at Beijing Normal University. He is also the vice president of the International Society for Chinese Studies. Dr. Hou’s research focuses on the study of modern Chinese thought and culture, as well as International Sinology.  Selected publications: “Research of Contemporary Chinese Studies in the United States,” “John King Fairbank and American Sinology,” “A New Study on the History and Thought of Modern China,” “Cognition in Chinese Culture: the Path for Chinese Cultural Studies,” and “Academic thought of Modern China.”
