Workshop on:

14:00-14:40 Strategies for Teaching Academic Writing and Reading for University Success

Dr. Andrea Dallas

In this session, participants will learn about strategies for teaching academic writing and reading that will lead students to be better prepared for studying in American or English-medium universities. First, there will be a brief discussion of the areas in which English as an additional language undergraduate students struggle during their transition to university. The workshop will then focus on teaching strategies to address two specific areas of difficulty: (1) academic written English, including genre demands and plagiarism; and (2) academic reading, including a focus on workload, textual and lexile level demands. Attendees will actively participate in discussions and activities throughout the session.

14:45-15:25 Empowering Students’ Language Learning through Project Based Learning

Drs. Jessica Midraj and Sadiq Midraj

Research has shown that effective implementation of Project Based Learning (PBL) in ESL/EFL language classrooms can lead to student attainment of language learning outcomes as well as enhanced work practices, reasoning, and interpersonal skills for learners of various ages and levels of linguistic proficiency. In this session, participants will learn how to implement the PBL instructional approach in their language classrooms by discussing three aspects of PBL: learning goals, design elements, and teaching practices.  Next, participants will review a sample PBL task and design their own.  Finally, “helpful hints” will be discussed.  Suggested resources for related teaching materials will be provided.

15:30-16:10 Assessing the Reading Fluency of Young Learners

Drs. Sadiq Midraj and Jessica Midraj

The purpose of the workshop is to practice assessing English language reading fluency with literacy practitioners using grade-appropriate reading materials for learners.  The workshop facilitators will provide samples of appropriate reading materials that include copies of reading passages and authentic sound clips of students reading in English.  The facilitators will model assessing samples of learners’ reading accuracy, automaticity, and prosody, and participants will assess reading fluency using authentic samples.  The intended audience of this workshop is English literacy teachers and academics who are interested in assessing the reading fluency of young learners.  By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to assess English reading fluency and compare the learners’ reading fluency in English to their fluency in their first language despite phonological and morphological differences between the two languages.
