Li Yuan-chia went to Taiwan in 1951 and entered the Art Teaching Department of Taipei Normal University. The following year, he started studying from Li Chun-Shan and Chu Teh-Chun. Li Yuan-chia then became a peer of Wu Hao and Hsia Yang, founding members of Eastern Painting Group. After graduating, he travelled and lived in Italy and the United Kingdom. Li Yuan-chia joined II Punto in 1960 and his abroad exhibitions then extended to Rotterdam, Milan, and Bologna. Li received international popularity at a very early time. In 1962, his works were already exhibited at +’Venster together with a well-established simplistic artist — Lucio Fontana. Li settled in Cambria, northern England in 1968 and founded the LYC Museum in Cambria.
He was a highly sensitive artist and audacious experimenter who produced a very special syncretic art, the pictures are deep and concise, often revealing wisdom and beauty, combining Chinese metaphysics with Western abstraction and experiment convincingly yet delicately. The vehicle for this union was Li's concept of the "cosmic point", representing the"origin and the end of creation". Li is recognized as the first conceptual artist in the Chinese world and also one of the pioneers of Taiwan's abstract paintings and conceptual art. In the journey of art creation, Li got rid of the traditional bondage and opened a new chapter of art.
Asia Art Center is honored to have the generous support from The LYC Foundation in London to loan four important ink and watercolor pieces of Li Yuan-chia Taipei Period works.
