Lan Young Group

In 1961, Mr. Wang Pan-Youn formed the Lan Young Group with his friends, and it had then become an important literati painting association in Taiwan. Their works also constituted a significant chapter in the history of Taiwanese art. The Lan Young Group focused on the technique of expression in the Western oil painting but also incorporating the conception of traditional Chinese ink painting. In terms of objects in their artworks, they also combined the nostalgia, the familiarity and personal emotions towards the Lan-young culture, the culture stems from their homeland. These unique techniques and emotions are the embodiment of the multiculturalism formed in Taiwan.

Wang Pan-Youn

I like to leave some space blank in my paintings, I like to talk in a reserved way, and I like to contemplate, not to strife with introspection.

Born in 1912 in Xuzhou, Jiangsu. He was admitted to the Western Art Department of Shanghai Academy of Art in 1933. He Arrived in Taiwan after the War of Liberation in 1949 and started teaching at the Lo-Tung High School and settled in Yilan, Taiwan in 1952. Wang Organized the Lan Young Group in 1961 and retired from the school in 1973 to focus on his art career. Having gone through the war, Wang Pan-Youn’s early turbulent life was reflected in the bitter aesthetics of his painting. His broad-minded composition and simplified coloring show a feeling of emptiness and vast loneliness. The size of his later period of works has increased. The result is remarkable mystic impact, which conveys to the viewer a sense of cosmic, they also reveal the artist’s mysterious charm and inner pursuit. Whether the layering and richness of watercolor, the modern abstract composition in oil, the Eastern imagery in ink, or the broad-minded ethereal cosmology, his art introduced a style never seen before in Taiwan, and as such his oeuvre occupies an important position in the art history.

The unique choice of colors and the simple artistic structure endow Wang Pan-Youn’s works with a sense of emptiness, yet a strong feeling of memories and a mysterious metaphor are hiding behind his works. Most of the objects are humans, female nudes, animals and natural landscapes. Every person, dog, bird and eagle he painted seems to be the avatar of himself, telling the audience an autobiographical monologue.

The colors Wang used on female figures are dreamy and warm, as he is recalling the romantic youth of the past. The boat, sun, and moon are all embodiments of the bitterness of beauty, as he is trying to ignore the sufferings in life. There is an obvious “bitter aesthetics” lying in his works; but the more important thing is that the monochromatic depiction as well as the abstract structures, lines, making these works modern and avant-garde art pieces.

Wang Pan-Youn devoted all his life into painting, even in his old age. His later works are even simpler and purer, reaching an absolute infinity and eternity.
