李芳枝,生于台北。1955年台湾省立师范学院(今台湾师范大学)美术系毕业,1956年与刘国松,郭东荣,郭豫伦等人共同举办“四人画展”,1957年成立“五月画会”,为创始人之一,是当时主张中国美术现代化、抽象化的重要女性艺术家。1959年赴巴黎艺术学院研究,并透过朱德群介绍,与法国艺术家Jean Souberbie (1891-1981)学习油画,婚后与瑞士籍艺术家丈夫Hans Brun定居瑞士山林,过着淡泊素朴的生活。简单朴实的生活环境形塑李芳枝独树一格的创作风格,以Lifang之名活跃欧美画坛,作品经常受邀展出。
李芳枝早期以颜色厚重,笔触豪放的抽象画为主,中国笔墨之破笔飞白的线性表现,强劲有力,试图融汇东西文化并予以创新。1970年代以后作品回归自然写生,并在错综重叠的笔法及明朗清丽的色彩间,透露出诗情的优雅与愉悦的意境,对于李芳枝而言,融合东西文化以创造自己风格的理念,迄今仍是其创作准则。她以古典诗词为题,书法线条入画,水墨技法经营画面,用色淡雅,同时善用符号与象征的关系转化,在写实与抽象之间,描绘自然的万物生机,发展自己独特的绘画语义,而有更深层的象徽意义。

“创作现代画即是为了表现中国文化传统,反映民族文化传统性格根源。天地人万物的存在即中国艺术的哲思传统,用现代人的感知及现代绘画的技巧去表现……依据天时四季之秩序,怀着爱世人的心。贯通古今,兼有东西文化之长,融合写意及抽象,融汇古典及现代,以柔和的方式将自己的感触表现于画面。”

The modern paintings I work on are to express the traditional Chinese culture, reflecting the origin of the tradition and the national personality. The absolute existence of all elements on the earth is the philosophy of Chinese art, and I chose to show that by the modern painting technique, and from the eyes of a modern painter due to the orders of the seasons, and with a love for the world. From the ancient to the modern, from the Eastern to the Western, from the freehand brushwork to the abstract, from the most classic to the modern art, I blended all of them together to gently show my feelings in my works.

A native of Taipei, Lifang graduated from Taiwan Provincial Teachers College (now as Taiwan Normal University) in 1955. She hold the Exhibition of Four with Liu Kuo-sung, Kuo Tong-Jong and Kuo Yu-Lun, then became a founding member of Fifth Moon Group in 1957. In 1959 she traveled to Paris where, through an introduction by Chu Teh-Chun, she studied oil painting under the French artist Jean Souberbie (1891-1981). After marrying, she settled in the mountains of Switzerland with her husband Hans Brun, living a humble, rustic life while remaining active in the European art world. Her simple living environs shaped Lifang's distinctive artistic style.
In her early career Lifang produced mainly abstract paintings with heavy colors and bold brush strokes. Her linear expressions, employing the "broken brush" and "flying white" techniques of Chinese calligraphy that leave blank streaks within a brush stroke, were forceful and puissant, an innovative attempt to merge Eastern and Western cultures together. At the begining of 1970s her artwork returned to natural realism. With multi-layered brushwork and bright, limpid colors, she manifests a mental space of elegance and joy. Employing titles from classical poetry, she integrates calligraphic lines into her paintings, incorporates ink painting techniques, favors muted colors, and uses symbols and figurative relationships. Depicting the vitality of creation, her works demonstrate a unique artistic vocabulary containing deep symbolic meaning.
