In 2022, the Chamber's Committees were highly active, offering exclusive opportunities for our members through industry events and exclusive access to key US and Chinese government officials.

AmCham China Committees – 2022 Year in Review

Cosmetics and Nutrition Committee 

– Joint Winner of Committee of the Year Award

Government Engagements: 2


Highlights: 

  • Committee leadership refreshed.

  • 17 Calls for Comments and position letters submitted to NMPA, NIFDC.

  • Enhanced communication and collaboration with other Chambers.

  • Submitted two joint letters to the NMPA in cooperation with other Chambers.

  • Hosted monthly Committee member meetings in 2022.


Human Resources Committee 

– Joint Winner of Committee of the Year Award

Co-chairs:

  • Janet Chen, Microsoft

Events: 5


Highlights: 

  • Organized a successful virtual Human Resources Conference with over 180+ attendees.

  • Feedback on social insurance policy issues was collected from 10+ member companies and delivered to relevant government departments.

  • Events included HR Committee Mixers.

  • Currently more than 150 active members in the Committee WeChat group and 380 mailing list subscribers.


Energy Committee 

Co-chairs:

  • Sue Wang, Honeywell

  • Grace Chen, Aspen Technology

Government Engagements: 6


Highlights: 

  • Delivered 16 events for Committee members.

  • Specially designed a carbon training workshop series.

  • Developing a green power initiative.

  • Continued to develop a special global focus initiative for non-US general Committee members.

  • Provided support for technical energy and environmental focused events for the Northeast and Central China Chapters.

  • Note: Around 20 scheduled events from the 2022 event calendar were postponed or cancelled due to COVID.


Agriculture Committee and Food & Beverage Committee 

Agriculture Committee Co-chairs:

Food & Beverage Committee Co-chairs:

Government Engagements: 5


Highlights: 

  • Two meat-cutting/grading workshops with USDA grant. The first program had over 100+ participants and high-level participation from China Meat Association and the head of US Dept of Agriculture in China.

  • Hosted six sustainability workshops with a grant from 永续中心. Key topics included, a briefing on MARA carbon sequestration sustainability policy and sustainability tech/investment.

  • Ukraine Food Security Supply-Chain Webinar.

  • Sustainability Paper/Database – collected company perspectives and best practices on sustainability that has/will be used in agriculture, food, and beverage engagement with government stakeholders on these issues.

  • Created robust external partnerships and programs:

    · Sustainability/Low Carbon ( Engagement Series)

    • Stakeholders: MARA/NDRC/MEE/NHC/SAMR

    · Rural Revitalization/Common Prosperity (Govt. Engagement Series)

    • Stakeholders: DRC/MARA

    · Healthy China (Engagement Series)

    • Stakeholders: DRC/NHC/CDC/SAMR

    · Food Safety & Quality (Govt Engagement Series)

    • Stakeholders: SAMR


Healthcare Committee 

Co-chairs:

  • Jeffery Bernstein, UPMC

  • Alice Xu, Boston-Scientific

Events: 13

Government Engagements: 6


Highlights: 

  • Built a sustainable cooperation channel with HHDRC, including monthly workshops.

  • Reengaged with former Healthcare Cooperation Program members, of which many rejoined.

  • Hosted joint events in cooperation with the Legal Affairs Committee, US-China Agriculture & Food Partnership, and Government Affairs & Policy department.


Manufacturing, Customs, Supply Chain, and Sourcing (MSSC) Committee 

Co-chairs:

  • Craig Abler, Boeing

  • Jonathan Kendrick, Pacific Resources International (PRI)

Events: 8


Highlights: 

  • Held six webinars and two industry mixers.

  • The webinar, "Sanctioning Russia: What You Need to Know" attracted over 370 sign-ups.

  • Held three White Paper discussion meetings. Drafters from across the sector contributed excellent material for the annual 2022 White Paper.

  • Currently there are more than 65 individuals in the MSSC Committee WeChat group chat and the community is more active than ever.


Sports Committee 

Co-chairs:

  • Tony Qi, Major League Baseball

Events: 8


Highlights: 

  • Hosted the 4th AmCham China AseanPlus Golf Tournament.

  • Hosted a Boxing Self Defense Workshop.

  • Hosted three sold out "Put a Fling on It" Frisbee events.

  • The Salsa Party event was another creative success this year.

  • Overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees of Sports Committee events this year.


SMEs & Entrepreneurs Committee 

Co-chairs:

  • Marco Reyes, YMCE

  • Bob Olivar, OCM

Events: 7


Highlights: 

  • The SME community requires a broader mix of networking and knowledge-sharing events than other Committees. To cater to the community's needs, seven of this year's events were specifically designed with member feedback in mind and maximized benefits for attendees.

  • Collaborated with other Committees for events and provided members guest speaking opportunities to proactively promote themselves and develop their businesses.

  • Two SME candidates ran for the 2023 Board of Governors, demonstrating the SME Community's increased trust and willingness to become more actively involved in the Chamber.

  • The SME Committee WeChat group has remained very active. In addition to sharing SME-related information, staff have also been helping answer epidemic policy and prevention questions.


Chinese Government Affairs Committee (CGAC)

Co-chairs:

  • Bing Zhou, Intel

  • Christine Yuan, Rio Tinto

  • Qiang Lv, Abbot

Events: 6

Government Engagements: 2


Highlights: 

  • The six events held this year aimed to help Committee members adapt during a challenging year.

  • June's Annual Government Affairs (GA) Conference had over 200 guests attend online.

  • Introduced a new session at this year's GA Conference where three veteran GA professionals spoke on how best to evaluate GA's work and how to further enhance internal collaborations.

  • The majority of our events attracted at least 50 attendees. Event topics included the Two Sessions, 20th Party Congress, and the Anti-Monopoly Law.


Women Professionals Committee (WPC) 

Co-chairs:

  • Su Cheng Harris-Simpson, SCHS Asia

  • Frances Yu, Amway

  • Qian Liu, The Economist Group

  • Lin Gao, Message Coach

Events: 6


Highlights: 

  • One of the Chamber's most diverse Committees, the WPC hosted a variety of events from a women's health webinar to a self-defense workshop.

  • The participation rate of WPC events remained high, and continued to draw attention to the importance of females in leadership positions.

  • There are more than 110 individuals in the WPC WeChat group chat, with many becoming involved with the Chamber through WPC activities and community sharing.


ICT Committee

Co-chairs:

  • Joanna Mao, USITO

  • Wenjie Gu, Zoom

  • Tim Stratford, Covington & Burling

Events: 5


Highlights: 

  • The 2022 Technology and Innovation (T&I) Summit, held in close consultation with the ICT Committee, was one of the most successful T&I Summits of the past years. It was also the first offline signature event since the COVID pandemic.

  • For other regular events, there were at least 30 attendees at every event.

  • The ICT Committee's WeChat group has over 145 active members, and has become one of the most popular Chamber WeChat groups.

  • According to feedback from the Member Satisfaction Survey, the ICT Committee was the most active industry Committee and the third most active Committee among all Committees and Cooperation Programs.


Legal Affairs Committee

Government Engagements: 1


Highlights: 

  • The Healthcare Industry Intellectual Property Protection Workshop invited government officials along with international law firm, Hogan Lovells as speakers.

  • Hosted the "Top Five Legal Issues Small Business Must Know" event.

  • Joined the 9th annual China International Forum on Fair Competition Policy of China.


Education Committee

Co-chairs:

  • Carol Li Rafferty, Yale Center Beijing

  • Jingyu Wang, University of Notre Dame

  • Fran Liu, University of Minnesota

  • Katie Beck, Western Academy of Beijing

Events: 4


Highlights: 

  • Successfully held the first international school fair and Autumn Family Day, sponsored by seven prestigious education institutions.

  • Hosted an online higher education event in cooperation with leading University representatives and the US Embassy.


Media and Entertainment Committee

Co-chairs:

  • Charles Shi, Universal Parks

Events: 3


Highlights: 

  • Co-Chair contributed significantly, from White Paper drafting and kick-off meetings, to helping to organize events such as the cycling tour and screenings.

  • The committee developed diversified events to engage more members of AmCham China community.

  • New events received positive feedback and a lot of attention from non-members who expressed their interest in joining AmCham China.


Marketing, Advertising, and PR Committee

Co-chairs:

  • Fiona Huo, The Economist Group

Events: 3


Highlights: 

  • 50+ attendees joined the MAP Public Sentiment event.

  • Excellent event speakers generated positive feedback from members.


Real Estate and Development Committee

Co-chairs:

  • Eric Hirsch, Cushman & Wakefield

  • Xenia Otmakhova, Ballistic Architecture Machine

Events: 3


Highlights: 

  • Hosted a diverse mix of events, including one mixer, one online event, and one tour.

  • Five member companies committed to drafting the White Paper Real Estate chapter, while the two Committee co-chairs were also instrumental in this process.


Young Professionals Committee

Co-chairs:

  • Connie Feng, ExxonMobil China

Events: 3


Highlights: 

  • YPC Networking 101 – How to Talk About Your Job in February.

  • Lunch & Learn event with ExxonMobil's China Chairman in July.

  • Jointly hosted the 2022 US Year-End Tax Seminar joint with the Tax Committee.


Business Sustainability Committee

Co-chairs:

  • Jing Wu, UPS

Events: 2


Highlights: 

  • Hosted a panel discussion on Women in Climate Change.

  • Planned for a panel discussion on the Business Sustainability Outlook Post COP27 (postponed due to COVID).


Financial Services Committee

Government Engagement: 1


Highlights: 

  • Successfully organized the People's Bank of China White Paper delivery meeting.


Tax Committee

Co-chairs:

Highlights: 

  • Jointly hosted the 2022 US Year-End Tax Seminar with the Young Professionals Committee.


Automotive Committee

Highlights: 

  • Hosted AmCham China Auto Forum 2022 Strategic Planning Meeting.

  • Hosted the Auto Forum OEM Members Q2 Get-Together.
