AmCham China Meets with US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo just concluded a four-day visit to China where she met with Premier Li Qiang, Vice Premier He Lifeng, MOFCOM Minister Wang Wentao, MCT Minister Hu Heping, Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jining, and AmCham China President Michael Hart at a roundtable that featured several AmCham China member companies.

After the recent visits of US Treasury Secretary Yellen and US Secretary of State Blinken to Beijing, the business community has observed a slight stabilization of US-China relations after these high-level bilateral engagements. It is hoped that Secretary Raimondo could target more tangible goals for two-way trade and commerce that could help to clarify the position of US firms in China.

US Secretary of Commerce Raimondo's four-day visit has been warmly received by American businesses in China, especially her endorsement of the "small yard, high fence" strategy. This philosophy resonates with our belief that US-China trade relations can remain mutually beneficial, while still safeguarding each nation's security interests. Secretary Raimondo, who oversees both trade promotion and export controls, is the ideal advocate for striking this balance.

We are encouraged that Secretary Raimondo and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao have established two dedicated channels for constructive dialogue, which aim to guide both routine commerce and sensitive export control concerns, thereby laying the groundwork for mitigating potential conflicts and generating constructive resolutions.

Notably, Secretary Raimondo continued her engagement with American businesses in China just months after hosting our AmCham China business delegation in Washington DC. Her consistent involvement highlights a genuine commitment to understanding the multifaceted challenges and opportunities we face.

Given the significant US commercial and investment interests in China, we are appreciative of Secretary Raimondo's efforts to recalibrate this important, yet complex, relationship. The American business community in China stands ready to engage with both governments, with the goal of seeking tangible results that improve the business environment for our companies.
