Welcome to IFP this Thursday for a talk with urban researcher Linda Vlassenrood from the International New Town Institute (INTI) and artist and photographer Lard Buurman, currently in residence at IFP. Linda will introduce her new book “Shenzhen - From Factory of the World to World City”. The book provides both a detailed overview of Shenzhen’s current planning issues and illustrates viable solutions.

Lard Buurman was last year invited by Linda to make new work in Shenzhen for the urbanism\architectural Biennal in Shenzhen and for this book. He will show this work and tell more about his method of collaging his urban images to capture the city with a focus on 'people as infrastructure'.

关于Linda Vlassenrood

Linda Vlassenrood is an independent curator, writer and consultant on architecture, urban planning and design. Linda worked as a curator at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) from 2000, serving as chief curator from 2008 to 2011. The NAI used to be one of the largest architecture centers in the world. Her department worked successfully on a rich and diverse program of exhibitions, lectures and debates, events and educational programs for professionals as well as broader audiences.

Linda has curated a significant number of noteworthy exhibitions and events on architecture in its broadest sense, among them "China Contemporary” in which she placed Chinese architecture on the international map in 2006. At INTI, Linda set up and runs the international research program "New New Towns". Why we need to rethink the city of tomorrow today" in Shenzhen (China) since 2012.

关于Lard Buurman

Lard Buurman (1969 Zeist, The Netherlands), studied Photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where he graduated in 1997. In his photography the public realm has always been prominent. By reconstructing the images from several documentary pictures from one spot, a hybrid of documentary and staged photography emerged. By focussing on the narratives and lives of people that encounter each other in the public realm, he developed his own visual idiom. In this series ‘Peoples Republic of China’, the city as a multi-layered space, a site of permanent change and incessant encounters gradually emerged.

From 2008 onwards he’s been working on capturing African cities that are characterized by informal structures and the art of improvisation. Buurman has shown his work in the Netherlands in the context of art and architectural festivals as well as on the African continent i.e. at Lagos Photo (2010 and the upcoming edition of 2014) and the Biennial Picha Recontres Lubumbashi, in Congo in 2013.
