Walmart vowed to support Shenzhen’s development by signing a cooperation memo with the city’s investment promotion bureau Thursday at a ceremony to celebrate the U.S. retailer’s 20th year in China.

Walmart opened its first Chinese branch in Shenzhen in 1996. The retailer’s first Walmart supermarket and Sam’s Club outlet in China opened on the same day, in Shenzhen’s Honghu area and Jingtian area, respectively.

Walmart now has 426 outlets in 169 Chinese cities and 19 delivery centers. It employs 100,000 in China and 95 percent of merchandise it sells in China are sourced from 7,000 Chinese suppliers, the retailer said.

“Walmart has grown steadily in Shenzhen and in China,” Vice Mayor Chen Biao told the ceremony.

“I often wonder about the secrets of Walmart’s success, and my observations tell me two things: one is that Walmart is a retailer that is keen on consumers’ shopping habits and is good at collecting this kind of information, analyzing it, and making use of it. The other is the enthusiasm and responsibility the employees have shown towards their work,” Chen said.

Walmart’s sales of fast moving consumer goods has been growing for 14 straight quarters through June and the Sam’s Club outlet in Futian District has topped all Walmart stores for eight straight years. The retailer plans to open 20 more Sam’s Club in China in the coming three years.

Walmart has reiterated its investment plans in Shenzhen, where its China headquarters is based. It upgraded its delivery center in Shenzhen’s Kengzi area in July, expanding the storage area from 40,000 square meters to 70,000 meters. It also plans to open a third Sam’s Club in the city in Longhua District.
