WOMEN between the ages of 9 and 45 are advised to be vaccinated against human papilloma virus (HPV), as a growing number of women have been dying of cervical cancer, doctors said at a lecture Saturday.

About 30 percent of new cervical cancer cases in the world are reported in China, the doctors told the audience. About half a million people worldwide are diagnosed with the cancer each year, while more than 250,000 die from cervical cancer annually.

The doctors said getting an LCT (liquid-based cytology test) and an HPV vaccination are important for the prevention and early diagnoses of cervical cancer. The use of condoms can also prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and HPV infection, thus reducing the risk of cervical cancer.

Zhang Lin, vice director of the Department of Gynaecology at Shenzhen People’s Hospital, and Hu Hong, another doctor, gave the lecture to the audience of about 100 people.

Since the HPV vaccine became available in Shenzhen in October last year, more than 50,000 women have been put on the waiting list to get the vaccine. The vaccine is relatively safe, the doctors said. Still, some adverse reactions have been reported worldwide, including spasm, epilepsy and Guillain-Barre syndrome.

The prevention and treatment of breast cancer was also addressed at the lecture, which was sponsored by the Shenzhen Women and Children Development Center and the Healthy Shenzhen app, and organized by Zens Clinic.

The doctors said it is not necessary for pregnant women to take folic acid capsules unless in special circumstances because vitamin compounds already contain folic acid.
