OVER 280 students will be the first batch of students to graduate from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHKSZ) this summer, among whom 70 percent will further their studies overseas.

Most of around 60 percent of the students who intend to study for their master’s degrees at overseas universities have already received offers from top universities around the world, according to Professor Vincent Chang, associate vice president of CUHKSZ.

“Most of the remaining 30 percent of the graduating class have received job offers, but official employment status will come out six months after the students leave the university,” Chang said at an annual media reception yesterday.

Based on the students’ feedback, the average starting salary of the graduates is estimated to be around 150,000 yuan (US$23,745) a year, said Chang. Most students have chosen to work in Shenzhen or other cities in Guangdong Province.

The Shenzhen campus was established in 2014 and admitted around 280 students in its first year. Applicants were assessed on the results of gaokao, or National College Entrance Examination, as well as an independent examination designed by the university and an interview.

Professor Xu Yangsheng, president of CUHKSZ, said he hopes all of the students will uphold the idea of lifelong learning in the future. “Universities can only teach people a certain amount of knowledge, and what one should continue doing for a whole lifetime is to keep learning.”

The Shenzhen campus has developed rapidly over the past four years. Last year, it enrolled 951 students from 25 provinces and regions around the country for the undergraduate programs.

Another associate vice president, Jesus Seade, who is responsible for international admissions and the university’s exchange programs, said that CUHKSZ accepted 49 international students from 12 countries in 2017. “We are trying to promote the university’s global recognition and hope more international students will study here,” Seade said.

CUHKSZ currently works with 62 world-class universities, under a 3+1+1 arrangement, tripartite programs, exchange/visiting programs and international summer programs.

Over 60 percent of the students at CUHKSZ have participated in for-credit overseas study experiences, which is among the highest in the country.
