INSTITUTIONS and companies in Shenzhen received 44 provincial technology awards at Guangdong’s technology innovation conference held Monday. Huawei grasped the special top prize, local media reported.

The winning projects covered diverse fields, such as telecommunications, advanced manufacturing, high-tech services, biology and new drugs, aeronautics and astronautics, new materials and so forth.

In particular, 11 projects came from the telecom sector and eight projects concerned biology and new drugs, indicating that Shenzhen is strong in these two fields.

Huawei won a special top prize for its world-leading technology and application of high-end storage. The results of the research are regarded as a breakthrough for China’s information security.

It is also the first time a private corporation in Shenzhen has won the special top prize of the provincial technology award.

Since 2013, Huawei has invested over 400 million yuan (US$63.93 million) on R&D into high-end storage technology. The project owns more than 100 patents so far.

A government official from the city’s technology and innovation commission said that 26 out of 44 prized projects came from corporations, while the others were initiated by hospitals and universities.

A project carried out by the Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Graduate School solved a quake-proofing problem for high-rise structures. The institute’s research yielded 109 theses and 10 engineering projects.

Shenzhen University also won a first prize for its research regarding Smart City tech that helped to solve multiple technical bottlenecks in wireless sensing and heterogeneous Internet structures.

The other first-prize-winning projects involved precision instruments, medical devices and water resources.

Meanwhile, authorities in Guangdong Province have pledged to support more fundamental and applied research to cultivate more innovation-oriented companies and attract more professionals, a Xinhua report said.

The province said that it aimed to become a comprehensive national science center, and it would accelerate construction of four provincial laboratories, and planned to build more.

Guangdong was ranked first in China in terms of regional innovation capability in 2017.
