Nikolai Demidenko, one of the most outstanding pianists of our time, gave a solo concert at Shenzhen Concert Hall last night.

The Russian pianist, a winner of the Montreal International Musical Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition, was invited to the city to attend the Shenzhen Belt & Road International Music Festival.

During the 90-minute-long concert, the pianist played Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 “Pathetique," Piano Sonata No. 14 “Moonlight," and Chopin's "Four Ballades." With his fingers jumping across the keyboard like mischievous spirits, the sincere and powerful performance won respect and praise from the audience.

The concert, named “The golden Sound - Piano Solo Concert,” was the pianist’s first performance in Shenzhen. He had previously held concerts in Beijing and Shanghai.

The pianist, who is in his sixties, said he felt pity for having no time to hang around in Shenzhen, and that he was amazed at the city’s technological development.

In the pianist’s eyes, music is beyond language. He said, “Like reading books, we read books in one way, but professional drama artists will read differently. It all depends on what the artist can see from the music and every audience can interpret it in a different way”.

Demidenko was impressed by the number of pianists in China and saw great potential of piano education in the country. “There are over 57 million people studying, teaching and playing piano in China. The number is bigger than the population of many countries. And if you look at international competitions, you will find more and more excellent performers from China.”

Bach is Demidenko’s favorite musician. He said, “If you judge music by how many human emotions you can find in that music, Bach was the champion. All the human emotions, including those emotions that we even don’t know, are all there.”
