LOCAL universities are welcoming more international students with the new term about to begin.
On registration day Monday, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) welcomed some 120 international students from 11 countries, including Canada, Greece, Indonesia, Latvia and Spain, an increase of about 30 students compared to the previous year, according to CUHK-Shenzhen.

One of the students, Jerome Jodie Harianto from Indonesia, told Shenzhen Daily that he chose CUHK-Shenzhen for its international atmosphere, proximity to his home country, and the advantage of having classes conducted in English.
Harianto is among the first batch of students enrolled for a new academic program jointly launched by CUHK-Shenzhen and CUHK in Hong Kong. The program will see him studying in Shenzhen for the first two years, followed by another two years in Hong Kong.
Georgia Tech Shenzhen Institute, Tianjin University (GTSI) also welcomed a batch of international students on its registration days Aug. 17 and 18.
This year, GTSI has seen an uptick in the number of international student applications and enrollments, in part due to the country’s easing of COVID measures, according to sources from the university.
Among the new international students is Chinenye Adanna Udechukwu from Nigeria, who probably had the longest flight time. She departed from the Abuja airport and transited through Doha and Hangzhou to finally arrive in Shenzhen after a 43-hour flight.
At the same time, Shenzhen Daily learned from sources from another two local universities, Shenzhen University and Shenzhen MSU-BIT University (SMBU), the first Sino-Russian cooperative university, that although their international students will not arrive for registration until September, they anticipate a rise in enrollments this year.
This year, SMBU has sent offers to 96 international undergraduates and 31 international postgraduates. The combined figure surpasses the total number of international students currently studying at the university. After the enrollments, the school’s number of international students will account for about 10% of its students, according to information released by SMBU yesterday.
