Former Shenzhen Mayor Chen Rugui is sentenced to life in prison for taking more than 108 million yuan in bribes yesterday. Shenzhen Special Zone Daily
Chen, who served as a member and deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress before his arrest, was stripped of his political rights for life and had all his personal property confiscated. The court ordered that all illicit gains and their proceeds be handed over to the State treasury. The first-instance trial found that between 2003 and 2022, Chen exploited his various official positions in Guangzhou, Zhongshan, and Shenzhen to benefit specific units and individuals in project contracting, project advancement, and business operations. The Nanning Intermediate People’s Court concluded that Chen’s actions constituted the crime of bribery. Given the extraordinarily large amount involved, the court decided that severe punishment was warranted. However, considering that some of the bribes were not fully realized, along with Chen’s truthful confession, voluntary disclosure of additional bribery facts, repentance, and active return of illicit gains, the court decided to impose a lighter sentence.
