5 Arrested in Beijing Hotel Attack
By Justine Lopez
The story of a woman being brutally attacked in a Beijing hotel made international headlines the past week after a video depicting the incident went viral. Police have now arrested a total of five suspects in connection with the assault, the Siasat Daily reports.
Police arrested their first suspect, a 24-year-old man named Li, last Thursday in Xuchang City in Henan Province. It is now reported that authorities have detained four more suspects.
The incident took place on April 3 and received attention from people around the world after the victim posted a three-minute video of the assault on Weibo.
The video depicts a man attacking a woman inside of the Yitel Hotel in Beijing's Chaoyang District. According to the victim, the man approached her as she was trying to get into her hotel room. The video shows the man physically assaulting her and, at one point, dragging her down the hallway by the hair.
Li reportedly told police that he was handing out information for a prostitution company at the hotel during the night of the incident. When he spotted the victim, he believed her to be a prostitute who was not working for his company. Li then called the other suspects (and alleged members of his company) to inform them of the woman and proceeded to attack her.
Although five have now been arrested, the investigation is still ongoing.
