Cycling 'Expressway' Proposed to Ease Beijing Traffic
We all know Beijing has really bad traffic, especially during rush hour. Traffic jams can make commuters’ lives incredibly frustrating. But the city is posing a pretty interesting solution to the problem – a cycling 'expressway.'
The Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning & Design is currently mulling over the idea of constructing the city’s first-ever highway dedicated entirely to cyclists, Qianlong reports. The expressway would connect the areas of Huilongguan, Shangdi and Zhongguancun.
“We put forward that a route exclusive to cyclists should be built to link Huilongguan, Shangdi and Zhongguancun, and stations should be built for cyclists to take a break and repair bicycles,” the director from Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning & Design said.
Roughly one fifth of residents living in Huilongguan work in Zhongguancun and 16 percent work in Shangdi, which means there is a major influx of traffic to and from these two areas. The new ‘road’ would help ease traffic and commute times between these crowded areas.
