2008 Beijing Olympic Mascot Panda Gives Birth to Twins
Giant panda Maomao gave birth to twin girls on Tuesday at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, China Daily reports.
Maomao might look familiar, and that’s because she was the model for Jingjing, one of the official mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Maomao’s family actually has a long history with sports in China. Her mother Yaya, was born on September 22, 1990, at the time of the opening ceremony for the Beijing Asian Games. And her grandmother also happened to be the inspiration for a mascot for the Asian Games.
Maomao’s two new cubs were born healthy, weighing 129 grams and 145.1 grams. According to a source from the research center, mom and babies are all in good condition.
This isn’t the first time Maomao has given birth to twins. The giant panda, also had a set of twins on July 26, 2014. Their names are Maozhu and Maosun.
