Beijing Hospital Urgently Seeks 900 Sperm Donors
By Justine Lopez
Calling all men. Well, Chinese men. Peking University Third Hospital’s sperm bank is apparently in desperate need of your sperm. And they're willing to pay fairly handsomely for it.
The hospital announced on Monday that they need young, healthy men to donate. If the donation is successful, volunteers will be given RMB5000 (that’s USD751), China Daily reports.
The hospital says they need 900 donors. Those interested can register through September on the hospital’s official WeChat account.
But don’t get too excited. Not everyone is eligible to apply. Donors must be Chinese males between 20 and 45 years of age. They must also be living in Beijing at the time of donation. They cannot have an infectious disease or be color blind. And finally, they must have earned a junior college degree, at minimum.
Prior to donating, registered volunteers will be given two physical evaluations. Donors are required to give 21 milliliters of sperm during a maximum time period of six months.
So why the sudden need for all this sperm? According to the article, roughly 15 percent of married couples in Beijing and Tianjin are infertile. About 40 percent of these couples can’t conceive due to sperm-related issues.
Because the demand for sperm donations has increased in the capital, there is now a severe shortage. According to the hospital, couples often have to wait up to two years for a donor.
