Snacks in the City: Food & Drink Gossip in Beijing
By Noelle Mateer
If you've picked up a copy of our December issue you might have noticed that the food section has changed a lot this month. We thought about changing this column, too. I wondered, are readers sick of my snarky-yet-self-deprecating tone? And then I realized how depressing that thought is, because I have to live with this tone, inside my brain, every day until I die.
Anyway, we've now reached the part of my column where I transition from general life musings to food-and-drink news because I am required to do so for my job: November heralded the rolling out of hot drinks across the city! Particularly at Mimi e Coco, Modernista and The Tiki Bungalow. There is a new chef at TRB Bites, and also, Modo Urban Deli is closing. Only one of those news tidbits is sad; I’ll let you figure out which one (your hint is ‘Swedish meatballs’).
In keeping with its vocabularic disposition towards egg-related terms, Hatchery has a new brunch called Coop. You will not be surprised to learn that the base ingredient is eggs. You may be surprised, though, that a glass of cava or beer comes complimentary with any main. Atmosphere also has a new brunch, in which the key word is ‘Champagne,’ and the key strategy is booking on smog-free days so you can see the view.
Next up, stay tuned for our Golden Fork Awards this month I always say That’s Beijing throws the best awards in the city, but then again I’m always drunk at these things, so I would say that.
