Donald Trump Wants Apple to Stop Manufacturing in China

In a speech made at Liberty University on Monday, US Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump vowed he would make Apple manufacture its products in the United States. Befitting a candidate whose campaign slogan is “Make America Great Again,” Trump told the audience, “We’re going to get Apple to build their damn computers and things in this country instead of other countries.”

Apple currently manufactures only one of its products – the Mac Pro – in the United States; all other devices are manufactured throughout Asia. The iPhone, its most popular item, is notoriously made in Shenzhen by Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer that has made headlines in years past for a string of employee suicides.

While Trump has made a habit of criticizing the outsourcing of jobs to China on the campaign trail, critics have called into question the feasibility of his latest statement. It is unlikely that the United States could compel Apple to move all of its operations back to the US without levying severe import taxes, lowering American labor costs, or bringing the American manufacturing industry up to speed with its Asian counterpart. Difficult enough for any President to accomplish, though we’re sure Trump has full faith in his own abilities. Maybe he can talk manufacturing strategies with Xi Jinping over a delicious McDonald's meal.
