World Intellectual Property Day: China focuses on IP rights

2016-04-26 CCTVNEWS

April 26 marks the World Intellectual Property Day, which was established in 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in order to raise awareness regarding the importance of intellectual property protection.

As a party to the WIPO, China has, over the years, taken concrete steps to protect intellectual property rights (IPR) and crack down on counterfeit products.

According to General Administration of Customs, they detained nearly 2000 batches of goods that infringed on IPR, in 2015. They were worth a total of nine million US dollars.

To better protect IPR, General Administration of Customs has carried out the Anti-Counterfeit and IPR Infringement Campaign codenamed “Breeze”. Starting from April 2015, the campaign will last until 2018.

RECORD NUMBER OF COPYRIGHTS

Meanwhile, official data show that the amount of the copyright registration during “Twelfth Five-year Plan” period (2011-2015) in China is nearly 4 times the number for all of “Eleventh Five-year Plan” period, and 16 times the number for all of “tenth Five-year Plan” period.

China started to record the number in 1992. It took 20 years to get 100,000 annual registrations. But it took only three years, from 2012 to 2015, to reach 200,000 and this year it has reached 300,000.

Officials from China's copyright administration said the government will strengthen law enforcement to protect the interests of the people.

"Popularization of legitimate software promotes the protection of the intellectual property rights in the whole society,” said Yan Xiaohong, deputy director of National Copyright Administration of China.

“We have a zero tolerance for copyright infringement and piracy. We will strengthen law enforcement in the central government… Meanwhile, we will promote education, so our Chinese nation could be more innovative,” he added.
