Four people have been injured after a man used a “beer bottle-made explosive” at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport, according to local police. However, there are no details on the motive of the explosion.

Except for three flights that were undergoing check-in at the counter, other flights haven’t been influenced by the explosion.

The blast was caused by home-made explosives packed in a beer bottle, which detonated at one of the check- in counters at around 2:40 p.m.

Police said that the male suspect first put the bottle, which was in his hand luggage, at the counter and set it off, before trying to kill himself by slitting his throat with a knife.

The suspect is said to be in critical condition at the hospital.

Witnesses say they saw smoke near the counter and heard a huge blast the airport’s Terminal 2, which operates flights from major international airlines.

The injured passengers, including one from the Philippines, have been hospitalized.

Video footage of the incident shows a person being whisked in a stretcher by medics while others were scattered inside the airport.

Located about 30 kilometers east of the city center, Shanghai Pudong International Airport is one of two international airports in Shanghai and one of China’s major aviation hubs.
