China's education ministry warns students of bad schools in US

For those with plans to apply for a US school, be on alert!

China’s Ministry of Education recently issued warnings against two US schools, ITT Technical Institute and Livermore Valley Charter Preparatory, which have been accused of bad management and cheating.

ITT is a technical institute with approximately 130 campuses in 38 US states. The for-profit giant once served over 45,000 students, while charging among the highest tuition fees in the industry.

This past August, however, the American Department of Education barred the company from receiving federal financial aid, such as student loans and Pell Grants.

Later, it announced to cease enrolling any new students at all, and soon stated it will shut down for good.

Livermore Valley Charter Preparatory has recently come under fire as well for a slew of allegations, including deliberately hiding the real number of its international students, overcharging Chinese students, and threatening them. The school is being investigated by the Alameda County District Attorney.

The number of Chinese students choosing to study abroad has increased dramatically in recent years.

According to the American Institute of International Education, China was the top sender of students to the United States in 2015, with 304,040 students, an 11 percent increase from the previous year, and almost quadrupled the number a decade ago.
