This year’s vernal equinox falls on March 20, marking the official start of spring in China and the northern hemisphere.

Mercury levels are gradually rising, days are turning longer, pants are getting shorter and flowers are slowly blooming again.

In no time, Beijing will turn into a festival of colors and fragrances – and the buds of early bloomers are already visible across the city.

For those in quest of floral fun this season, here is a guide to the most sweet-scented venues around Beijing, and what to except (apart from seas of crowds).

桃花|平谷

去年今日此门中， 人面桃花相映红。

人面不知何处去， 桃花依旧笑春风。

尽管古装玄幻大剧《三生三世十里桃花》已经完美收官大结局了，那一片绝美的桃花林依然历历在目，叫人怀念。别着急，现实生活中也有粉红色的桃花海，分分钟点燃你的少女心。

Pinggu, a suburban rural district at the eastern limits of Beijing, is known for its giant peaches in the summer, earning it the moniker “China’s Peach Hometown.”

But before spring becomes summer and the flowers turn into fruit, check out the outstanding scene of Pinggu’s peach trees in full bloom.

In China, peach blossoms are more than just a symbol of spring. They represent being lucky in love, especially among younger people, who believe that a flowering peach tree will bring them good luck and love, making everything literally just peachy.

This is because in Mandarin, being lucky in love literally means having “peach blossom luck,” or桃花运 (táohuāyùn).

But beware! That same blossom that left you with butterflies in the stomach can just as easily leave you in a bad romance, if you let those flowers rot away (làntáohuā), 烂桃花.

樱花|玉渊潭

樱花落尽阶前月，

象床愁倚薰笼。

远似去年今日，恨还同。

While Japan’s sakura season is well known around the world, the cherry blossoms in China can be just as stunning. Beijing itself is home to plenty of perfect places for a springtime stroll under the blossom, while central and southern areas of the country are also chock-a-block with cherry trees in bloom.

Yuyuantan Park is in Beijing’s Haidian district, and draws droves of tourists every year thanks to the vibrant varieties of cherry blossoms it has on show. Entering through the park’s west gate, you’ll find yourself lost in a sea of delicate white or pink blooms.

March and April are typically the best months to enjoy cherry blossoms. So with just a few weeks to go, why not plan a trip to admire these delicate symbols of spring?

As a widely celebrated flower and cultural symbol in many Asian countries, cherry blossoms are particularly important in Japan. The Japanese believe cherry blossoms can only be enjoyed for seven days, and are thus representative of the “transience of life”.

For the Japanese, taking a look at cherry trees in bloom is almost a ritual, and many families take picnics to see sakura every year, a springtime activity called “hanami.”

The plum blossom has long been an important symbol in Chinese culture. As the Chinese saying 梅花香自苦寒来goes, the fragrance of plum blossoms “comes from bitterness and cold,” a phrase that describes having a strong will and indomitable spirit.

Ancient Chinese used to group together the plum with the orchid (兰), bamboo (竹) and chrysanthemum (菊) as 梅兰竹菊, a term that represented different noble characteristics. Many scholars, artists and writers in China used the term as an appropriate metaphor in their artworks, poems and essays to describe positive personalities.

The Beijing Ming Dynasty City Wall Relics Park, located in the central area of the capital, is one of the best spots to see plum blossoms, as they burst into flower beneath the ancient walls.

As temperatures warm up, the park gets busier and busier.

So if you do plan to see the plum flowers, it’s probably best to avoid going on the weekend.

玉兰｜大觉寺、潭柘寺

刻玉玲珑，吹兰芬馥。

White Magnolia flowers, also known as Yulan (玉兰) in Mandarin, have also entered full bloom across the country, adding a splash of color to urban areas recovering from the long harsh winter. Having been selected as Shanghai’s official flower by its locals back in 1986, the magnolia is also a popular sight in many parts of the capital.

Dajue Temple and Tanzhe Temple, both in the western suburbs of Beijing, always attract a great number of tourists for their elegant and fragrant magnolia flowers in full bloom every spring, symbolizing purity and innocence, as they add a gentle touch to their solemn surroundings.

While Dajue Temple is famous for white magnolias, Tanzhe Temple is particularly well known for its purple magnolia flowers. With yellow varieties of the tree also springing up in various sections of the city, the magnolia is said to be the best-known flower species in Beijing.
