TV drama “In the Name of the People”, the first major Chinese production on the rarely touched subject of corruption, has become an online sensation since its debut on Hunan Satellite TV on March 28.

The series, often compared to the hit US political drama House of Cards, which has a huge Chinese following, is inspired by real-life cases involving high-ranking government officials. The 55-episode production has been viewed 21 billion times online across Chinese streaming platforms including IQiyi, Youku and Tencent, according to the official Weibo account of the show.

“In the Name of the People”, which has captivated fans of all ages, shows local government leaders trying to sabotage a top justice's arrest order; laid-off workers holding violent protests against a corrupt deal between the government and a corporation; and fake police drive bulldozers into forced eviction sites.

“The series allows me to peep into not only the details of corruption, but also provides a fact-based look into China's political ecosystem in general,” commented Weibo user @marcsounddoll.

The storyline of a senior official hiding 230 million yuan (33 million US dollars) he accumulated from corrupt practices in a bed is similar to a case involving real government official Wei Pengyuan, who amassed 200 million yuan (29 million US dollars) in bribes, and stored the cash in his house.

“The insights of reality are always deeper than film. I really thought our country was a dark one as I watched “In the Name of the People.” Yet on second thoughts, it is light that the darkness could be filmed as a TV series,” commented a Douban user.

More than a decade ago, anti-corruption dramas disappeared from Chinese primetime television. Authorities in 2004 decided to restrict the production of such dramas as too many were of poor quality.

But when Chinese President Xi Jinping took power in 2012 and launched a sweeping campaign against graft, anti-corruption was back in vogue.

A report by the Supreme People’s Court, released in March 2017, said that China’s court system oversaw 45,000 graft cases that implicated 63,000 people last year. Thirty-five of those convicted were former provincial or ministerial officials, and 240 were former prefectural officials.
