WeChat's international users in China more active than locals

2017-05-17 CGTNOfficial

Could it be? WeChat – China's popular instant messaging app – is apparently more popular as a main communication tool among foreigners in China than locals, according to a new report published by the app.

It shows the average foreigner in China sends 60 percent more messages every month than a Chinese user. With audio and video messages, the average frequency is respectively 42 percent and 13 percent.

Emoticon stickers are also popular among international users in China, who send 45 percent more wacky and silly gifs and images than local users, WeChat said in the report.

At the same time, international WeChat users in China have also been keen on digital red envelopes, whereby they can send sums of money to friends or others. The average foreigner sent on average 10 red envelopes per month on WeChat. Six out of 10 foreign users are now accustomed to WeChat Pay services, the report showed.
