Chinese Premier Li Keqiang left Beijing for Berlin on Wednesday to start an official visit to Germany, at the invitation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

During his visit, he is scheduled to meet President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and attend the annual China-Germany prime ministers' meeting. Li and Chancellor Angela Merkel will also participate in a China-Germany innovation forum.

Li will then visit Belgium where he is scheduled to attend the 19th China-EU leaders' meeting in Brussels, and take part in a business summit and a dialogue on innovation cooperation. He will also meet King Philippe and hold talks with Prime Minister Charles Michel.

Li's visit is expected to contribute to enhancing strategic communication and coordination, increase political trust and inject new impetus into bilateral relations, said Vice Foreign Minister Wang Chao prior to Li's visit.

Leaders of China and the EU will also send a message of support for an open world economy, free trade and investment, globalization and world peace and stability, said Wang.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-Germany ties and 46 years of China-Belgium diplomatic relations.
