Bergün, a small town in Switzerland, issued a new policy last Sunday, discouraging tourists from taking photos of the small town and sharing it on social media.

What’s this for? The government indicated it wants to ‘protect’ others who may feel sad seeing these pictures, but not being there.

A ‘no picture’ sign in the town says “photographs of our picturesque landscape, shared on social media, can make others unhappy because they themselves cannot be here.’ The spectrum includes building and landscapes around the town. Those who violate the rule can be fined with five Schweizer Franken (5.2 USD).

The city's mayor, Peter Nicolay, recorded a video responding to all the anger and queries online specifically soon after the ban was seen online.

“The beauty of our village has become world famous thanks to our friendly photography ban,” Nicolay said in the video. “Our village is so beautiful, so it is impossible to take a holiday photo that is not beautiful… We have found a solution for you… We can give you a friendly special permit.”

So don’t be disappointed. You may be given special permits from local officials if you are a “particularly insistent tourist”.

No one knows if this is a very successful marketing strategy, or if local residents in Bergün simply want to express their serious feelings.
