There is a sea of differences between the tones and plans given by the President of the U.S. and the President of China. Yes, I am talking about the two speeches, well-known now, that the two leaders delivered at this year’s APEC meeting in Da Nang, Vietnam.

美国总统和中国国家主席在越南岘港举行的APEC会议上的演讲内容迥然不同。

For President Trump, he pledged continuity of the U.S. policies towards the Asia Pacific region: friends, partners, and allies. But his blueprint just doesn’t add up, blaming everything and everyone and wrapping it up with the slogan “America First”.

His Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping though, offered a totally different set of messages: deliverables for those in other parts of the world, support for more regional and multilateral trade mechanisms, further reform and opening up with a bigger and freer market.

特朗普总统承诺将延续美国对亚太地区的合作伙伴关系，到头来谴责了所有人，却结尾在“美国第一”。

反观中国，国家主席习近平传达了截然不同的信息：支持更多的区域和多边贸易机制，进一步改革开放，建立一个更大更自由的市场。

According to the Chinese President, there are real and important opportunities: the global economy is really coming back to life after years of downward trend. You really do not want to miss that. YOU DO NOT! Well, China does not.

China is also inviting you to join. China will open up for 2 trillion dollars of inbound investment, while it is investing 2 trillion dollars in the rest of the world in the very near future. And China will host the first ever international import expo in Shanghai next year. bang, bang, bang, one after another, real, tangible actions coming from China.

习近平主席表示现在恰逢好时机，经过多年的下滑全球经济正在复苏。没有人愿意错失这一良机。

中国正在邀请各方的加入。中国将进一步开放市场，引入2万亿美元的外资投资，同时在不久的将来也在世界其他地方投资2万亿美元。明年中国也将在上海举办首届国际进口博览会。一个接着一个，真实有形的举措。

For President Trump, he offers some tools too: punishing those who violate intellectual property rights, as he perceives it, and asking others to mimic him, preferably by inserting their country’s name followed by the word “first”.

而特朗普总统也提供了一些“方案”：惩罚那些侵犯知识产权的人。与此同时要求他人模仿他的说法，最好是也表示自己国家“第一”。

Before I left the convention centre, the place where the head of states addressed the business community, a long line of people in fact, apparently from very different countries, were even lining up, just a stone’s throw away from President Xi Jinping’s entourage when the Chinese delegation prepared to leave for the next event. With cameras in their hand, business brochures in their bags, their eyes twinkled with the kind of excitement and determination that one could only have once hope has restored.

在我离开会议中心，也就是一国首脑给工商业界代表做演讲的地方之前，我看见人们排成了长长的一列，很明显，他们来自不同的国家。他们排着队，离习近平主席的代表团只有几步之隔，当时代表团已经准备启程前往下一个地点了。人们手里拿着相机，包里装着商务宣传册，眼神里充满激动和坚定，这种发亮的眼神只有在重燃希望的人身上才能看到。
