Three Wishes for Davos
Davos -- a place in Switzerland, also a state of mind -- simultaneously exciting and frightening. So please, Davos Genie, grant me three wishes.
To be in more places at the same time
There are 400 sessions in five days. Each day, 12 hours of live crosses and pre-recorded interviews, live streaming and articles. One wishes for Magic Monkey's special powers, to be able to blow onto a handful of hair and clone dozens of identical selves – one to cover each venue; one to prowl the corridors and network and doorstop; one to liaise with HQ; one to make sense of it all; another one to cry in the toilet from exhaustion.
When the mind (and sometimes bladder) threatens to explode, it is always humbling to think about others' schedules -- one year at the auto show I ran into a veteran hack who showed me his crumpled timetable that stopped me griping about my 12-interview day: he had 60 people to talk to. No doubt WEF attendees have similarly maddening agendas and that's why their assistants give death stares if you're slow.
To know everyone's faces
With record turnout of 3,000 people this year -- safe to say, most are big-wigs of some description (70 heads of state, 1900 business leaders). Nobel laureates, Oscar winners, gazillionaires, global order setters, entrepreneurial legends and scientists whose products changed your lives, new presidents with the tailwind of reform hopes, and every business services company serious about their billable--and you find you don't know who's who.
It's disappointing that decades after Terminator featured robots that can instantly detect your identity and characteristics with a scan, reporters still have to rely on eyesight and memory. Here's another reason to push for diversity in WEF attendees, because let's face it, it's easier to identify subjects who are not all middle-aged white men.
Here's a challenge -- match the names and companies below with the photos.
To know what to ask
Think of your ultimate idol, think of three intelligent things to ask that haven't been asked a thousand times before. The bigger the celebrity, the harder it is. The more important the company, the tougher it is. Throughout my Davos-swotting, I wished I were a Deep Machine Learning Robot to digest everything ever written about the subject/industry/company/country.
For artists and scientists, one can be more direct. But for those used to dishing out corporate and political spin, the question everyone wants answered is what he/she least wants to respond to, so phrasing can make or break.
On top of the scheduled interviews, one needs to be prepared to meet anyone at anytime. Case in point, when I ran into Bill Gates in Davos at his hotel, all I could think of was "Hi Bill!" Yes, a fine moment.
If YOU cornered him in Davos, what would YOU ask? Leave your questions below.
