7月11日上午9时10分，今年第8号台风“玛莉亚”登陆福建连江黄岐半岛沿海。据专家分析，台风“玛莉亚”有着爆发力强、移动速度快以及强度大三大特点，所以它成了今年以来登陆我国的最强台风。登陆后，“玛莉亚”的强度虽有所减弱，但是仍给浙江、福建和江西等地带来了强降水和大风天气，给民众日常生活带来诸多不便。

Typhoon Maria made landfall in Lianjiang County in China’s eastern Fujian Province at about 9:10 a.m. BJT on Wednesday, with maximum winds of 42 meters per second, according to local meteorological authorities.

Forecasters said Maria is the strongest typhoon so far this year. It brought gales and heavy rain to Fujian and neighboring provinces Zhejiang and Jiangxi. Schools and factories in the region were closed on Wednesday while most outdoor work was suspended. Transportation was also disrupted as trains and flights were canceled.

台风vs飓风 “傻傻分不清楚”？

What is the difference between a hurricane and a typhoon?

台风和飓风其实都属于北半球的热带气旋。根据世界气象组织的定义，中心风力一般达到12级以上、风速达到每秒32.7米的热带气旋均可称为台风或飓风。两者的唯一区别在于生成的海域不同。发生在西北太平洋和南海的热带气旋是台风，而发生在东北太平洋和大西洋上的称之为飓风。

Many people might ask whether there are differences between a typhoon and a hurricane. Actually, they are the same weather phenomenon – tropical cyclones. The only difference is the location of the system’s formation.

When a tropical cyclone reaches winds of 32.7 meters per second or higher, it is classified as a hurricane or a typhoon. Usually, a cyclone originating in the northwest Pacific and South China Sea is called a typhoon. The same type of disturbance in the Atlantic and northeast Pacific is called a hurricane.

谁来给台风命名？

How is a typhoon named?

仔细留意新闻，你会发现台风有着各种各样的名字，比如“莫兰蒂”、“莎莉嘉”、“泰利”等。那么谁来给台风取名字呢？

1997年，在香港举行的台风委员会第30次会议决定，采用具有亚洲风格的名字命名台风, 并于2000年1月1日起正式使用。 台风名字由世界气象组织所属的亚太地区的柬埔寨、中国、朝鲜、中国香港、日本、老挝、中国澳门、马来西亚、密克罗尼西亚、菲律宾、韩国、泰国、美国以及越南14个成员国（地区）提供。每个国家（地区）提出10个名字，总计140个名字，可循环使用。

In 1997, the 30th session of Typhoon Committee of World Meteorological Organization decided to use a new system to name typhoons, featuring Asian styles and characteristics. There are 140 names available, provided by 14 countries and districts in the Asia-Pacific region which are affected by typhoons annually. The naming system has been in service since January 1, 2000.

The names are not only of persons, but also nouns of categories such as animals, plants, astrology, places, mythological figures and jewelry. Some names are retired by the Typhoon Committee if systems named after them have caused severe damage and serious casualties.

在台风命名系统中，中国提供的10个台风名字分别是：龙王、海燕、悟空、玉兔、风神、海神、杜鹃、电母、海马、海棠

然而，也有一些名字因为命名的台风“太过凶残”， 造成灾害过于严重，而被台风委员会除名，比如中国提供的“海马”。

在除名“海马”之后，台风委员会要求负责取名的中国提交新的台风名字以补空缺。2017年9月中央气象台开展了“我给台风起名字”活动，号召大家一起为台风起名字。

今年三月，由网友提名的“木兰”经由中国提交给世界气象组织台风委员会并获得确认通过。
