The Palace Museum once again became a big deal on Chinese social media after it announced on February 17 that it would be open to the public at night for the first time in 94 years for Lantern Festival celebrations. The special event will feature a red lantern show, light projections of renowned ancient paintings and New Year-themed exhibits. Tickets to the first tour sold out within hours of going on sale Saturday afternoon, according to Xinhua.

The rush to buy tickets for the event was so intense that it caused its official website to go offline around midnight on Sunday. Following the quick sell-out, museum-goers took to social media to express their excitement, leaving others to imagine what it would be like to spend a night at the museum in the Forbidden City.

The Lantern Festival changed numerous times during different dynasties, so did the traditions and customs. Besides from organizing a public nighttime event in the Palace Museum, some also hope special cosplay activities to recreate scenes from the ancient paintings and books that depicted the festival can be held, so as to teach people about the festivities.

For example, during last year's Lantern Festival, a collection of pictures titled "A Lady of Tang Dynasty Eats Tangyuan" flooded social media sites and became an internet sensation. The photos capture a chubby model wearing traditional clothing in the style of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and eating "tangyuan", the dessert made from glutinous rice flour that is usually made for the Lantern Festival.

Many netizens enjoyed how these photos recreated the clothing, hairstyle and make-up of the Tang Dynasty, saying that similar activities should be encouraged to revive the history and traditional culture.
