CGTN CGTN 2021-02-14

Following the end of the English test on Saturday afternoon, China's annual national college entrance examination, also known as Gaokao, concluded in most regions across the country. As always, the English essay questions drew people's great attention and became a trending topic on China's Twitter-like Weibo immediately.

全国一卷要去伦敦美术馆当志愿者;

全国二卷要参加排球赛;

全国三卷要去参加音乐节;

As the essay topics have already been disclosed by the Gaokao students and some media outlets, this year, CGTN invited international editors to join the highly-debated examination. What are their answers? Let's take a look!

After listening to my teachers tell me about "labor being glorious," I went home and decided to spend the weekend testing this theory out for myself. I packed my bags and made plans to volunteer picking watermelons at a farm -- call it a "day in the life of a migrant laborer." With zero expectations, I found that labor, while sometimes rewarding, is never easy -- especially when it comes to watermelons. I strained underneath the sun carrying watermelons back and forth from the field to the facility. I made sure to take one home for myself and ate the fruit of my labor while telling my parents about my trip later.

If you'd asked me what my favorite fruit is in summer, the answer is crystal clear. Watermelons! My dad always gets three or four at a time. There's a particular spot in our fridge reserved for watermelon because there's nothing more refreshing than a cold slice of the sweet, luscious fruit in the steamy hot Beijing summer.

This is why I was thrilled to learn about the social practice activity organized by our school last week. They'd send us to a watermelon farm! Since I've never been on a farm, I thought there was much I could learn from the experience. I wondered whether we'd be able to eat watermelon every day?

I packed my suitcase and said goodbye to my parents. They warned me that it's going to be hot working on the field and that I'd need to drink lots of water."I'm sure they'll have a free flow of fresh watermelon juice," I told them so they would stop worrying about me.

Once we arrived at the watermelon farm, I was immediately sent to the field to help with the harvest. We had to carry the massive melons to the truck all by ourselves, in a cotton bag. The field work was gruesome indeed! After three watermelons, I wanted to take a break, but I didn't dare to ask my supervisors for one, as no one else seemed tired. In the evening, I could barely feel my arms, and my back was all sore. I fell asleep in one second. Only in the morning, I realized that I hadn't had one single bite of the watermelons we had been harvesting all day.

Only back at home with my parents, we tasted a piece of the enormous melon I had brought them from the countryside. It was the most delicious watermelon I have ever tasted. I told my parents all about the hard work that's behind the daily necessities we take for granted. My uncle, who came over that night, said, "I know. I've been sent to the countryside too, but much longer than you." We finished the whole watermelon that evening, talking way past bedtime.

After listening to Mr. Shu talk about the virtues of labor, I decided to spend a weekend at a local farm. I packed some one-use underwear because Mom won't be there to wash them. She also told me to sleep with one eye open at night, whatever that means. The watermelon patch was great! I picked 10 whole watermelons! I don't understand why people get paid for something so fun and easy. A super-tanned uncle who was also working on the field muttered something I couldn't quite hear when I told him that.

The only thing I didn't like was that there was no shower at the farm. But I found a bucket of water in the kitchen and dumped it all over my sweat-stained body. The aunty got really mad when she found out, saying that it was drinking water she had brought back from the well in the morning.

Aside from not having air conditioning, a shower, or a queen-sized bed, the life of a labourer is indeed glorious.
