Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) president L. Rafael Reif said in an email sent to the school community on Tuesday that the unfair and excessive scrutiny targeting people of Chinese descent may "create a toxic atmosphere of unfounded suspicion and fear" and thus hurt both the world-famous research university and the United States.
In the letter, Reif expressed his dismay about some circumstances painfully relevant to these scholars and students of Chinese descent: "They have been not only exemplary members of our community but exceptional contributors to American society. I am deeply troubled that they feel themselves repaid with generalized mistrust and disrespect."
He warned that "such actions and policies have turned the volume all the way up on the message that the U.S. is closing the door – that we no longer seek to be a magnet for the world's most driven and creative individuals…And we should expect it to have serious long-term costs for the nation and for MIT."
At the end of the letter, Reif reaffirmed his support for these students and scholars, "Let me say with warmth and enthusiasm to every member of MIT's intensely global community: We are glad, proud and fortunate to have you with us."

Many American scholars and leading universities showed their opposition against the U.S. government's intensified scrutiny and tightened review of Chinese applications for student visas. They said the educational and cultural exchange between China and the U.S. should not be politicized and unreasonably restricted.
Yale University president Peter Salovey pledged support for international students in an open letter in May, affirming Yale's "steadfast commitment" to its international students and scholars, and stressing they were "welcome and respected on our campus." He added that openness was "a key to the extraordinary success of America's great research universities" and "must remain a hallmark of Yale."
Other U.S. universities including Stanford University, UC Berkeley and University of Michigan have also released statements to express support to international students and scholars including those from China.
Statistics from the Institute of International Education (IIE) show that China is the largest source of international enrollment for America's colleges and universities and there were more than 360,000 Chinese students in U.S. in the 2017-2018 school year.
A report released by IIE said that U.S. schools benefit from the global perspective and cultural diversity Chinese students add to campuses, as well as the tuition fee they paid.
