The Hong Kong International Airport canceled all remaining flights for a second day on Tuesday. All check-ins were suspended starting 4:30 p.m. local time.
Protests at the airport turned violent on Tuesday night after radical protesters captured two men. Eyewitnesses said the men were beaten and tied up. One man was a traveler and the other was a reporter from the Chinese mainland.
The first violent incident occurred at around 19:00 local time as a large group of demonstrators surrounded a male passenger in the departure hall, suspecting him of being a police officer from the Chinese mainland, as they snatched his passport and searched for his name online.
Without confirming his identity and his reason for coming to Hong Kong, the protesters tied his hands, poured water on his head and kicked him, totally ignoring his explanation. He was eventually knocked out after hours of brutal attacks. Several protesters covered cameras with umbrellas to hide their actions.
According to Hong Kong newspaper Ta Kung Pao, the traveler had explained to the protesters that he was from Shenzhen and that he had come to the airport to see off his two friends who were flying to the United States.
After nearly four hours of torture, dozens of police officers arrived at the scene, escorting the men and emergency workers out, but the protesters blocked their way and prevented them from leaving.
Another violent incident, which has aroused widespread condemnation and outrage on social media, involved reporter Fu Guohao from the Chinese mainland media outlet Global Times, who was brutally assaulted and seriously injured by the protesters at the airport.
Eyewitnesses said that the man was wearing a yellow high visibility vest and that protesters were demanding to see his press ID. The rioters pinned him to the ground, seized his belongings and draped an "I love HK Police" T-shirt over him, as others tried to step in and stop the violence.

These acts are "outrageous and have overstepped the bottom line of a civilized society," and all parties are urging the police to "take relentless enforcement action to bring the persons involved to justice," a statement said.
