Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice
While in southern China, eating tangyuan, or glutinous rice balls, is essential to the festival.
"As every family starts to make glutinous rice balls, you know that Winter Solstice is finally upon us."

However, Dongzhi is not just about dumplings and glutinous rice balls. In fact, different places have their own traditions when it comes to the culinary customs of Winter Solstice. For example, people from Tengzhou City, eastern China's Shandong Province, are accustomed to having mutton soup on this day. Hangzhou residents would go for rice cakes while people living in some regions south of the Yangtze River would most probably sit with their families and have a meal made of red beans and glutinous rice.
