There's a rise in hate crimes targeting Asian Americans across the United States. Over the past few weeks in specific, social media has been flooded by a slew of disturbing videos of Asian Americans being violently attacked.

To help bring the attacker to justice, actors Daniel Dae Kim and Daniel Wu teamed up to offer a $25,000 (approximately 161,000 yuan) reward.

"We need to take actions as leaders of our community, to make a statement that we are not gonna take this anymore and that we need to take action and rise up for this," said Daniel Wu during an interview with CNBC on February 7.

The suspect in the Oakland case, who also attacked another two Asians on January 31, was recently arrested. Fortunately, the three victims all survived. These attacks, however, are part of a larger pattern.

A national problem,
not just a regional one

In March 2020, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reportedly warned of a potential surge in COVID-19-related hate crimes against Asian Americans.

According to the California-based Stop Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Hate Center, in 2020, it has received more than 2,800 reports of hate incidents from Asian Americans. Eight percent of those cases involved physical assault.

A report from the United Nations last year also showed that over an eight-week period from March to May, there were more than 1,800 incidents targeting Asian Americans in the U.S.

Asian hate crime victims in New York City in 2020 alone saw an 867% increase compared to the year before.

The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce in California has received more than 20 incident reports in the last few weeks.

Raise awareness, seek for help

In an effort to raise awareness around such hate crime cases, many have stepped up and voiced their support through social media platforms.

Volunteers in the Bay Area also took to the street, encouraging people to speak out as well as providing help for the elderly.

"Our Asian American communities have had a very, very tough time in 2020," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Tuesday.

"Asian American communities suffered tremendous amount of discrimination and what's most painful is to think back that some of that hatred, some of that discrimination literally was emanating out of our federal government in Washington D.C."

U.S. President Joe Biden signed a series of executive orders upon his inauguration on January 20, in which he addressed the importance on advancing racial equity and support for underserved communities through the federal government.

Biden and First Lady Jill Biden also mentioned that "racism, harassment, (and) hate crimes" against Asians and Pacific islanders are "simply wrong" during video on the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

What to do?

Beyond awareness, what are some of the helpful suggestions that people can do either to protect themselves when experiencing hate or to support the Asian community?
