The World Health Organization (WHO), the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank launched a joint press conference on Monday to scale up equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.
On the same day, the heads of these four global organizations published an article in the Washington Post, titled “Here’s our plan to increase vaccine access and end the pandemic faster.”
"It has become abundantly clear that there will be no broad-based recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic without an end to the health crisis. Access to vaccination is key to both," the article reads.
In his opening remarks at the World Health Assembly on May 24, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the ongoing vaccine crisis is “perpetuating the pandemic.” He said over 75 percent of all the vaccines had been administered in just 10 countries. He described this situation as “a small group of countries controls the fate of the rest of the world.”
The first batch of COVID-19 vaccine supplied by China's Sinopharm to COVAX, the international vaccine campaign co-led by the World Health Organization (WHO), was officially rolled off the production line on Tuesday, which is China's commitment to implement global public goods of vaccines with practical actions, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said.
China will continue to support relevant enterprises in strengthening communication and coordination with the COVAX and other international organizations and continue to contribute to the global fight against the epidemic.
