CGTN CGTN 2022-05-27

The 2020 death of George Floyd, a Black man, by a White police officer in Minneapolis, led to protests across America and around the world.

It prompted calls for action against police brutality and racial discrimination. CGTN’s Dan Williams revisits the crime two years on.

Gallup's 2021 update on minority rights and relations found that 64 percent of Americans believe racism against Black people is widespread in the U.S.

At least 10 people were killed and three others injured in a mass shooting at a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo, New York State, on May 14.

The suspect, identified as Payton Gendron, was charged with first-degree murder and arraigned in Hannah's courtroom, Buffalo City Court Chief Judge Craig Hannah said.

Eleven of the 13 people who were shot were Black, and the FBI is investigating the mass shooting as a hate crime and racially motivated violent extremism.

Police killed 1,144 people killed by police in 2021, according to Mapping Police Violence, up from 1,132 people in 2020. Despite making up only 13 percent of the American population, Black people represent 23 percent of those killed by law enforcement in 2021.

Patrick Lyoya, 26, was killed during a traffic stop in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, on April 4, the latest in a series of Black people dying at the hands of police in the United States that has ignited widespread protests against racism and demands for reform.

Police have released four videos from the incident, one of which shows the officer - who has not been named - lying on top of Lyoya as the two scuffled and then appearing to shoot him in the head.

At an emotional press conference, Ben Crump, attorney of the Lyoya family, blasted what he called an "unnecessary, unjustifiable, excessive use of fatal force" that saw the officer "escalate a minor traffic stop into a deadly execution."

A gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Texas on May 24, killing at least 19 students and two adults. It was the deadliest school mass shooting since 2012.

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr made an impassioned plea to take stronger action against gun violence in the United States after the deadly school shooting in Texas.

"When are we going to do something? I'm tired. I'm so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there ... I'm tired of the moments of silence. Enough.”

As he looked into the camera, he continued, "So I ask you: [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell, I ask all of you senators who refuse to do anything about the violence and school shootings and supermarket shootings. I ask you: Are you going to put your own desire for power ahead of the lives of our children and our elderly, and our churchgoers? Because that's what it looks like. It's what we do every week."

In a long string of thoughts posted to Twitter, Obama said he and his wife Michelle were angry for the families of the Texas elementary school shooting victims.

“Nearly 10 years after Sandy Hook — and 10 days after Buffalo — our country is paralyzed,” he wrote, “not by fear, but by a gun lobby and a political party that have shown no willingness to act in any way that might help prevent these tragedies.”

But in his first remarks on the mass shooting in Texas, Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell offered no indication that the latest rampage has altered his thinking on the need to change America’s gun laws.

The Texas elementary school shooting is the 213th mass shooting in the U.S. in 2022, according to a database run by Gun Violence Archive (GVA). The nonprofit research group views an incident as a mass shooting if four or more people are shot, wounded or killed, excluding the gunman.

With just over 19 weeks into the year, the 213 mass shootings average out to about 10 such attacks a week.

As of Thursday, 7,626 people have died due to nonsuicidal gun-related incidents in the U.S. this year, according to GVA.

To ban or not to ban? Gun control has been a dividing issue in the U.S. for decades. But little change has been made to gun laws.
