Hot Pot Explosion at Restaurant Stirs Controversy
These days, a video of just about anything can go viral online.
May 15th, at a hot pot restaurant in Yunnan province, 2 male customers were sitting together. One of the men handed a lighter to the other and accidentally dropped it into the pot.
They called the waiter over to fetch the lighter. The waiter did not turn off the flame underneath the hotpot, nor did she ask the customers to step away from the table. Neither the waiter or the customers had any idea how potentially dangerous this situation is.
While the waiter searched for the lighter in the boiling pot, all of a sudden, the pot exploded!
A large amount of hot oil splashed on the waiter's face and body and a small amount on each of the customers at the table.
After the explosion, the waiter ran away, shaking her hands while the 2 customers jumped to their feet.
The restaurant staff immediately sent the waitress to the hospital accompanied by a colleague. She’s been treated for facial burns and is slowly recovering.
The restaurant says due to these unfortunate circumstances, they are taking measure to train their staff and improve safety. They are taking full responsibility by taking care of their staff and customers injuries.
It sounds like they are making the right steps towards improvement.

While the restaurant has said this, many netizens have shared various views.
Some say that the customers are at fault as they should not have been smoking in the restaurant while others say in the service industry, it’s the server's job to meet their customer’s needs. Many criticized the restaurant for their inadequate staff training.
Sadly, this is not the first time this has happened. Earlier this year in February, a hot pot restaurant in Chongqing had a pot explode suddenly. The pot filled with 200 ℃ hot oil exploded, luckily no one was hurt!
The fire department warns that after a lighter encounter high heat, it will explode within 20 seconds. The hot soup and oil in the pot caused the explosion to expand outside of the pot to reach the waiter and customers.
