How to Say Your Nationality in Mandarin？

You may have heard the following sentence:

Nǐ shì nǎ guórén?

你是哪国人？

Where are you from?

If you want to answer this question in Chinese, you can say  “我是 + country 人”, “人”means “people, person.” 

Attention please, some country names don’t end with “国”.

If you want to ask someone’s nationality, you can say “你是哪国人?”. “哪” means “which”, “哪国人” literally means “which country person”.

Wǒ shì+country+rén.

我是+country+人。

I am from...

我是中国人

我是美国人

我是日本人

To name the language of a certain country, you can say“country’s name+ 语yǔ”. “语” means “language”. However, “Chinese language” is not “中语Zhōngyǔ”. That’s because there are many ethnic groups in China, which means there are different languages.Mandarin Chinese, which is the most popular language in China,is named “汉语Hànyǔ”.
