Part I Writing

评述:

今年的写作题目总体较为简单,试题沿袭近两年的话题作文,题意理解上也没有设置障碍,词汇并不难理解, 题干中直接出现了主题词——The challenges of studying abroad(出国读书的挑战),Thechallenges of starting a career(创业的挑战),The challenges of living in a big city(在大城市生活的挑战)。

Directions:For thispart, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essayon the challenges of living in a big city. Youshould write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

One of thenoticeable phenomena emerging in the contemporary society is   that a growing number of individuals aresparing no efforts to live in a big city. However, living in a big city, fromwhere I stand, may pose numerous challenges to us.

The challengeswhich are brought about by living in big cities can be mirrored in thefollowing aspects. On one hand, being a city-dweller, to some extent, meansthat most of us have to be confronted with fierce competition and theever-increasing living cost, which may add extra burden to our daily life. Onthe other hand, it is universally acknowledged that the rapid industrializationand urbanization have taken a mighty toll on cities’ air, water and soil. Thus, the terrible ecological conditions in major cities will pose a potential threatto our health.

Taking all thesecontributors into account, we can naturally draw a conclusion that dueattention should be given to the challenges of living in a big city. Only inthis way can we embrace a more brilliant life.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write ashort essay on the challenges of studying abroad. You should write at least 120 words but no morethan 180 words.

The past century has witnessed the steep rise in the numberof Chinese undergraduates studying abroad in the context of globalizationeither for the purpose of a decent educational background or in the pursuit offreedom as well as independent lives.

Despite the seemingly fancy experience, the challenge itpossibly brings may not be merely restricted to a transition to totally newsurroundingsbut a course of adaptation in all respects. First andforemost, the language barrier tops the list of challenges of the life in aforeign countrywhich not only means to strive for a grasp of a newlanguage, but more importantly and demandingly, to fit in with the authenticand idiomatic use of the language. In addition, as a foreigner, it is naturalthat you have no knowledge of the local custom and established practice. Undersuch circumstances, one tends to come across with various awkward situation andthus mistakes are bound to happen all the times.

To tackle such problems, it is advisable for overseasstudents to make close observations and further enquiries. Dreadful as thosechallenges seem to be, there is no reason for us to shrink back at the sightfor there is always a way.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write ashort essay on the challenges of starting a career after graduation. You should write at least 120words but no more than 180 words.

With theapproaching of graduation, many graduating students have to make a significantdecision about their future—to start a career or to continue their study. Ifthey decide to start a career, they have to prepare themselves carefully forthe challenges they may be faced with.

First, collegegraduates have to transform their mentality from being a student withinstructions of teachers and support of family to employees who often need tosolve problems independently. Not to mention those who start their own career, they have to cope with everything by themselves. Second, to start a careermeans to take the initiative to do things and learn to plan our career. We areoften given tasks and nobody will instruct us like tutors in school.

In all, to start acareer is totally different from the life in college. Be sure to consider thechallenges carefully we may encounter in our career and make ourselves ready.

Conversation One

M: Mr. Brown’s lectures are so boring.

W: Yes, he is not a very exciting speaker. Butthe subject is interesting.

M: During every one of his lectures, I try tolisten. I really try. But after about 10 minutes my mind begins to wander and Ilose concentration. But I see that you seem to be OK. How do you stayfocused through the entire hour?

W: Well, what I do is keep my pen moving.

M: What do you mean?

W: It’s a method of active concentration I read about. Oneof the most effective ways to concentrate is to write things down. But ithas to be done by hand, not typing on a keyboard. You see writingby hand forces you to actually engage with what you’re learning in a morephysical way.

M: Do you review your notes afterwards then?

W: Sometimes, but that’s not important. My notes mayor may not be useful but the point is that by writing down what Mr. Brandsays I can follow his line of thinking more easily. Infact, sometimes I draw a little too.

M: You draw in class and that helps me pay attention?

W: Yes, honestly it works for me. I just draw littlelines and nonsense really. It was also in that article I read. It can keepthe mind active, prevent getting bored and help to concentrate. Again thepoint is to listen hard while keeping the pen moving. If I’m at home and Ineed to study what I do is read out loud. It has a similar effect towriting by hand. It helps memorize information in a physical way.

Question 8. Whatdoes the man think of Mr. Brown’s lectures?

Question 9. Whatdoes the woman do during Mr. Brown’s lectures?

Question 10. Whydoes the woman draw in class?

Question 11. Whatdoes the woman say about reading out loud?

8.      Dull

9.      She takes notes.

10.  It keeps her mind active.

11.  It helps her better remember what shelearns.

Conversation Two

M: And where is this?

W: These photos are from the Taj Mahal in India. Wewent there about ten years ago for our honeymoon.

M: Was it romantic.

W: Yeah. The Taj Mahal was a very romantic place. Theguide told us there is a famous love story behind this building that allIndians learn in school. I think it was during the 1600 and the princess atthat time died while giving birth to her 14th child. The Emperor loved theprincess so much and was so sad when she died that he ordered the palace to bebuilt in her honor.

M: Wow. That sounds very romantic. It looks amazing.

W: Yes, it’s gorgeous. It’s also larger in real lifethan it looks in the photos. The building is very tall and there aregardens in a wall around it all. It’s all built in this white stone and somewalls of the building are decorated with jewels.

M: It must have been very crowded when you were there.

W: Yes, it’s a very famous tourist destination. Sothere are thousands of visitors every day.

M: Was the rest of India crowded?

W: Yes, very crowded in many cities. Itwas sometimes so crowded that it was difficult to walk along the streetsespecially through busy markets. And there are so many cars. Trafficwas terrible but the people were friendly. The culture is amazing and wehad a great time.

M: What about the food?

W: The Indian food is great. There are lots of differentdishes to try and every region has its own special food.

Question 12. Forwhat purpose did the woman go to India?

Question 13. Why was the Taj Mahal built?
