Alicia Olatuja

Blue Note Beijing. Fri 13 - Sat 14. 260-460RMB

American vocalist Alicia Olatuja first came into the spotlight in 2013 while performing as the featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Barack Obama’s Second Inauguration. Having since collaborated with Chaka Khan, Christian McBride and legendary Hammond B3 organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, she's joined at Blue Note by John Nelson on piano, Ben Williams on Bass, and Christian Euman on drums.


Fat Music Festival

A love letter to Beijing's indie music scene and livehouses, 798 stalwart M Woods is teaming up with Gulou institutions DDC, Temple, School Bar and Fruityspace to host Fat Music Festival. Taking place over the course of three days, Fat is set to offer music lovers gluttonous helpings of live music served up alongside visual art.


Thierry Maillard Trio

La Plantation. Fri 13. 200RMB; 100RMB (students and children)

Dubbed the '1000 projects artist' due to his prolific number of collaborations and music releases, Thierry Maillard is a visionary jazz pianist and classically-trained composer. He arrives in Beijing with Dominique Di Piazza, father of the four-finger picking style and Yoann Schmidt, titular drummer of the The Blues & Beyond Quartet.


Stolen

Yugong Yishan. Fri 13. 100RMB; 80RMB (presale)

Chengdu-based band Stolen (stylized St.ol.en) perform spacey electro-rock that's reminiscent of Massive Attack, Kraftwerk and Joy Division. Embarking on a nationwide tour, Stolen will be performing music off their latest EP produced by English musician Mark Reeder.


Hip-Hop Underground

Omni Space. Fri 13. 100RMB; 80RMB (presale)

Stars from Beijing's hip-hop underground take to the stage during Omni Space's absolutely packed Friday night slot. Set to perform are N-Bomb, SistaKilla.L, Saber, DOMIe, Odd Couple, Drop Science, DJ Quaver and SheSan.


Cassette Store Day Day Concert (Side B)

Yue Space. Sat 14. 80RMB; 60RMB (presale)

Live Beijing Music and Nasty Wizard Recordings celebrate International Cassette Store Day with this face melting evening of rock 'n' roll at Yue Space. The lineup features Shanghai punk outfit Ugly Girls, post-punk ruffians Lonely Leary, '70s-inspired rock band Electric Lady and genre-bending outfit Guiguisuisui. Nasty Wizard will also be selling tapes from various labels from all across China on the night.


School Bar's October Rockstar Series

School Live Bar. Fri 13 - Sun 15. Free

Not really a gig per se, School Bar's latest series gives Beijingers the chance to hang out with musicians from some of their favourite bands as they takeover bartending duties. Friday night features Xiao Quan from Super VC while Sunday night sees Zhao Kai (Bedstars) and Xiao Zhong (Sino Heart) from Holy Sh*t.
