Make way for the Queenie's: the sandwich ruler opens a 2nd joint
Fancier digs, but with the same price point and all-day hours you love
Over the course of its long and distinguished reign in Beijing, sandwich
dive bar Queenie's has garnered a much-deserved reputation for its
absurdly low prices (5RMB Baileys shots anyone?) and ridiculously tasty
sandwiches. Now bent on consolidating its monarchy, the sandwich sovereign
is set to open a second branch in Chaowai this Friday.
Headed
up by Adam Gottschalk (formerly of Ron Mexico), this second branch is a
considerably bigger and swankier version of the hutong favourite with
plenty of distressed wood, comfy couches and communal dining spaces. For
loyal subjects of Queenie's worried about pretenders to the throne,
this heir apparent still has the same obscenely low price point and
all-day opening hours as the original, just within more stylish
confines.
By
changing up its décor, it's the hope that this second branch can
attract a wider base of devotees, particularly those who aren't
necessarily night owls. With that in mind, Queenie's Chaowai has
extended its
menu to also
include burgers (35RM), pizzas (45RMB), soups and salads (20-30RMB),
brewed coffee and freshly-baked bread. The craft beer selection remains
as extensive as ever and the sandwich menu unchanged, though whether
this new incarnation will be able to match the lofty-basement heights
reached by its gloriously divey pioneer remains to be seen.
