China's largest collection of Disney films will soon be on Youku
No VPN, no problem – it's a whole new world on Youku
In news which should come as a welcome surprise to all die-hard Disney
fans, Alibaba's entertainment division has just signed a licensing
agreement with Walt Disney Co, allowing the tech juggernaut to offer
Disney programs on its various video streaming platforms, including
Youku.
The online video hub already has a limited selection of Disney films
online, however under this multi-year deal with Buena Vista
International, Youku subscribers will be able to access more than 1,000
episodes from animated Disney series. Households with Alibaba set-top
boxes will also have access to a library of Disney programs, including
blockbuster films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Mulan and Frozen.
As
China's largest video streaming platform, Youku currently reaches 580
million devices and receives about 1.2 billion views each day, according
to Alibaba's news website Alizila.
This latest deal follows similar licensing deals already made with
Warner Bros, Paramount, Fox, NBC Universal and Sony Pictures.
The
best part? All these Disney programs will be streamable without the
need for a VPN, meaning that you'll be able to binge to your heart's
content.
