The best things to do this week
Your forecast of the week's best events
This week, we're welcoming in April with another stellar roundup of
events. With Qingming Jie (Tomb-Sweeping Festival) also on the horizon, it's time to start
planning for the long weekend.
MONDAY
National Geographic: A New Age of Exploration Since 1888
Beijing World Art Museum. Until Jun 24. 70RMB (presale)
Covering 130 years of the landmark magazine's stunning history, this exhibition brings to life photos taken from all corners of the earth and elaborates on the often haunting stories behind them.
TUESDAY
Christopher Chaplin
Yue Space. Tue 3. 150RMB; 100RMB (presale)
A combination of experimental electronica and chamber music, Christopher Chaplin's music style is best described as idiosyncratic. He'll be joined on Tuesday night by visual art duo Luma Launisch (Astrid Steiner and Florian Launisch) who create surreal film sequences which are disassembled and newly-arranged each live performance.
WEDNESDAY
Moonglow Follies: Hollywood Revue
Modernista. Wed 4. 240RMB (VIP tables); 190RMB (general tables)
Moonglow Burlesque returns to Modernista with 'Hollywood Revue', a
five-set extravaganza inspired by Hollywood's Golden Age. Performers
include Shirley Tempest, Diana Golde, Scarlet Manhattan, Liwa La Fleur,
Trixie Royale, plus guest burlesque dancer hailing all the way from
France, Sucre d'Orge.
Rid + Turtle Island
Mao Livehouse. Wed 4. 150RMB; 100RMB (presale)
Mao Livehouse hosts an indie doubleheader with self-described 'tribal
hardcore punk orchestra' Turtle Island headlining alongside mystical
Inner Mongolian quintet Rid.
THURSDAY
Ready Player One
In cinemas around Beijing until Apr 27
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One follows orphaned teenager Wade Watts as he attempts to find Easter eggs left behind by the deceased founder of Oasis, a virtual reality entity. It's a CGI-heavy fantasia that will pop your eyeballs, but giddy as it is, it never quite sells its characters or gets much purchase on your emotions. Still, it's got some great references.
FRIDAY
James Blunt
Cadillac Arena (formerly Beijing LeSports Center). Fri 6. 280-1,280RMB
Best known for mega hits 'You're Beautiful' and 'Goodbye My Lover', English singer-songwriter James Blunt returns to Beijing as part of his two-week Asia tour. Expect new music from his latest album The Afterlove and presumably, 'You're Beautiful'.
SATURDAY
Brodas Bros: BR2
Beijing Theatre. Sat 7. 100-380RMB
International hip-hop and urban dance company Brodas Bros was established in Barcelona back in 2006 and is described as 'a flow of energy, art, humour and imagination' by El Periódico. Check out this entertaining spectacle of light, dance and music at Beijing Theatre this Saturday.
SUNDAY
Arch Enemy
Tango. Sun 8. 680RMB; 550RMB (presale); 1,080RMB (VIP)

from such influential acts as Carcass, Armageddon and Carnage – bring
