The best films at the cinema this July
This month, more blockbusters make their way to China's cinemas. Take a look at our picks of the best upcoming releases in July.
Incredibles 2
In cinemas now
Still underground with criminalised superpowers and a destroyed home, Mr Incredible, Elastigirl and their children, Violet, Dash and the explosive baby Jack-Jack, quietly live in a dingy motel. However, their luck suddenly turns when a pair of wealthy siblings – the naive Winston (Bob Odenkirk) and brainy inventor Evelyn (Catherine Keener) – offer them a chance to restore the Supers' reputation. Dying to Survive (我不是药神)
In cinemas now
This slick Chinese noir comedy (and box office hit) loosely adapts the true story of a cancer patient who peddled imported medication in China. Think Dallas Buyer's Club, without the moustaches and Texas twangs, in the backstreets of Shanghai.
Hidden Man (邪不压正)
In cinemas July 13
This crime drama pits spies and swordsmen against each other in 1930s China. A follow-up of sorts to gangster flick Let the Bullets Fly – which Chinese film buffs will remember for breaking box office records back in 2010 – expect sharp wit, political intrigue and plenty of action.
Skyscraper
In cinemas Jul 20
All Dwayne Johnson wants to do is live in his Hong Kong mega-tower in peace – so why won't these terrorists let him do it? Sounds like an updated Die Hard, but only time will tell if Skyscraper can match what is (in our opinion) the greatest Christmas movie of all time.
Animal Crackers
In cinemas Jul 27
Yes, this animation is based on delicious wildlife-shaped biscuits. The story involves a mysterious box of Animal Crackers, a magical circus, wage slavery and an evil uncle voiced by Ian McKellen.
